Why do you need a freelance copywriter?
Whether you’re a commercial or non-profit undertaking, there’ll be times when you’ll need to advertise, promote or raise awareness of your products or services. All organisations need to communicate effectively with a range of audiences, like key customers, potential customers - and not forgetting your own workforce. Unless you employ your own in-house writers, contracting a freelance copywriter can be the most cost-effective way to handle your promotional and communications needs and, of course, frees-up your valuable time so that you can focus on running your business or organisation.
Lost for words?
If you're struggling to produce effective marketing or other business communications, don't worry - that's what I'm here for. My skills are in creatively using words to craft engaging text (copy) that gets your message across. Whatever type of communication you want to issue, I will write effective copy that stimulates your target audience’s interest and delivers the outcomes you’re looking for - at an affordable cost.
What I do
Below you'll find a summary of Sharptext Copywriting services. If you’re looking for something not listed, or you’re unsure if what you’re looking for is covered below, please get in touch so that we can discuss your needs. You can find a few examples of my past work in my Portfolio page.
Whether you want to run a high-profile advertising campaign, or something more modest in scale, I can help your business stand out from the crowd. I will write copy for your:
Classified or display adverts for use in the press (including job vacancy adverts)
Sales letters and mailshots
Leaflets and brochures
Point of Sale information
Though sometimes valuable advertising in its own right, good PR is primarily about building your profile and reputation, by informing and educating. I can help you with:
Press releases (both electronic and hardcopy)
Interview opportunity and event notices
Press packs, backgrounders and case studies
Technical papers and brochures
Internal and external newsletters
e-newsletters / e-zines
customer and employee surveys
customer complaint responses
Website copy (including SEO)
social media and blog “ghost-writing”
And some extras...
I can also write copy for your employment policies, funding applications... even speeches. As well as producing original text, I offer a proofreading and copy-editing service. Some clients find that particularly useful where, for example, an in-house expert has written a technical article or manual that needs checking for grammatical errors, or editing for house style, readability etc. And I can also produce and deliver training materials for your people on a range of workplace skills and issues. I'm a qualified and still active teacher, with years of experience of teaching diverse groups of adults, so you can rest assured that you will be investing in quality training provision for your workforce.
How I will work with you
In order to meet your exact needs I provide a bespoke service for each client. But for an idea of the process involved when you engage Sharptext for copywriting services you can download a copy of my indicative work process by clicking the button below:

And what I don't do ...
I’m not a designer or layout artist. My role is to provide your raw copy - text prepared for your specific needs depending on the type of communication you wish to use and your intended audience - which can then be set out by your designer or printer. However, I will happily liaise with your designer, or you may like to take a recommendation on a good designer if you don’t already have one.
Having said that, I do have sufficient design and ICT skills to produce eye-catching e-zines/newsletters, and can provide a complete administration, production and distribution package for such communications. This has proven to be a popular service with some of my clients. I can also build and manage a website for you, using the various template-based builders available – in fact the website you are currently viewing is an example.
The right words ...
... in the right order ...
= your desired outcomes
Thank you for visiting my website. My name is Mike Kidd, and I’m a freelance copywriter.
My past career centred on industrial relations, gradually evolving from active involvement into researching, teaching and writing about the subject. My writing included technical reports and manuals, in-house communications, journal articles, and project funding bids, which secured millions of pounds in stakeholder investment.
At the end of 2016 I decided to devote more time to writing, and set up Sharptext Copywriting. My aim is to write copy that delivers your desired outcomes, whatever the scale, purpose or format – everything from high impact advertising campaigns down to internal company communications.
Located in Ipswich, Suffolk, I’m equally happy to work with clients based further afield, whether you’re a commercial or non-profit organisation.
"Infobo required some content on apprenticeships for use on an app and website development. Mike understood what we needed straight away, hitting the right tone and displaying a great knowledge of the subject with his writing. Highly recommended."
Simon Parry, Senior Consultant and Managing Director, Infobo.com
"As an amateur athlete it can be hard to find the finances needed to compete at high level. Mike wrote a letter and information sheet for me to ask local businesses for sponsorship, which helped me raise funds to travel to Ohio for the 2017 Strongwoman competition, my sport’s unofficial world championships."
Andrea Thompson, Britain's Strongest Woman 2016 & 2017 and World's Strongest Woman 2019.
“Working with Sharptext Copywriting has been a pleasure. Mike works very hard to understand my needs, his work is of an excellent standard, and his impact on my business profile invaluable. I look forward to developing our relationship further."
Martyn Reuby, Red Kite Services
"I have worked with Mike on a freelance basis a number of times on various projects over the last few years. He is very conscientious and has considerable skill as both a copywriter and as an IT trainer. I always found he added great value to the project work undertaken and would not hesitate to recommend him to others."
